SLSU aids tropical storm Dante victims in Maasin City
The Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), facilitated by the office of External Linkages and Extension Services (ELES) has launched a donation drive to augment relief operations in the affected areas of Maasin City in Southern Leyte Province.
With the onslaught of tropical storm Dante (Choi-wan) on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, several families lost their hard-earned properties and homes in the baranggays of Rizal, Combado, Tagnipa, and in other low-lying and hilly areas in Maasin City. Heavy rains poured nonstop that resulted to sudden upsurge of water and created destructive flash floods that left a massive damage. Residents were forced to flee their own homes leaving their things, basic needs and properties behind, while some took refuge at the roof of their houses while waiting to be rescued.
With its corporate social responsibility and motivated by the “bayanihan” spirit, SLSU then gathered donations from its faculty, staff, benefactors and other private individuals to provide the need for relief after the devastation.
Faculty, staff and selected student leaders helped in gathering donations and in packing the relief goods which were then firstly distributed to identified SLSU students who were badly affected.
Another set of donations coming from the SLSU external campuses were handed to the City Government of Maasin, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office and the Liga ng mga Barangay, to supplement the relief operations done by the local government unit of Maasin City in response to Typhoon Dante.
ELES Director Dr. Rhoderick Malangsa said they are still accepting donations, and that these will be sent to SLSU Maasin City Campus to lead the distribution in identified communities.
Meanwhile, University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes is thankful for all the help to make the donation drive possible.
Likewise, SLSU Maasin City Campus Director Ms. Maria Estela E. Roa extended her gratitude to all the donors inside and outside SLSU community ‘who heeded our call to help.’
The province of Southern Leyte along with other provinces in the region were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 when “Dante” unleashed its wrath in Eastern Visayas on June 1.
