SLSU-FTVE holds Intellectual Property Seminar Series 2025
The Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office (KTTO), in collaboration with the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education, successfully conducted the intellectual property seminar titled “Understanding Intellectual Property and Novelty Search for Research and Product Development” on October 22, 2025. The event aimed to enhance the understanding of students and faculty members of intellectual property rights and their vital role in research, product development, and innovation.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Josefina Carpentero, College Dean, emphasized the importance of intellectual property awareness as a foundation of ethical and innovative research practices. She was followed by Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (VPRIES), who encouraged participants to uphold research integrity and foster creativity across disciplines.


The seminar featured resource speakers from the KTTO who shared insights on various aspects of intellectual property. Dr. Angel T. Sabusap discussed the Consideration of Intellectual Property in the Paradigm of Research, highlighting how IP principles shape ownership, dissemination, and protection of scholarly work. Meanwhile, Ms. Rio Katrina C. Avila tackled Intellectual Property in Student Research, Product Development, and University Policy, emphasizing how students can safeguard their innovations and align them with university IP guidelines.


Adding to the discussion, Mr. Jerome Jack Napala presented Novelty Search: Tools, Techniques, and Databases, where he demonstrated how researchers can verify the originality and patentability of their studies through proper novelty search tools and strategies. His session underscored the importance of due diligence before publication or patent application.

In his closing message, Engr. Jonelle H. Tablada, KTTO Director, commended the participants’ active engagement and recap that protecting intellectual property is both a legal responsibility and an ethical act of integrity. The seminar reaffirmed SLSU’s commitment to fostering a culture of creativity, safeguarding intellectual contributions, and aligning research practices with national and global standards for innovation and knowledge transfer.
