FHTM and SLSU Library Unite for World Food Day Outreach
On October 23, 2025, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM), in collaboration with the SLSU University Library, successfully conducted an outreach program in Barangay Zone II. The event was held in line with the global observance of World Food Day, carrying the meaningful theme "Fostering Hope, Transforming Minds (FHTM) in Celebration of World Food Day." The activity aimed to promote awareness and understanding of proper nutrition, food security, and healthy food practices among families in the community.
The program began with the checking of attendance of all participants, composed of parents and children from Barangay Zone 2 and Barangay Tampoong. It ensured proper coordination, organization, and documentation of the event. This was followed by an opening prayer led by Mr. Warren Campijiyos, invoking guidance and gratitude for the meaningful gathering. The singing of the Philippine National Anthem then followed, led by Ms. Zealyn L. Togonon, a faculty member of FHTM, helping to set a respectful and unified tone for the event.
To formally open the program, Hon. Marilou Acapulco Llevares, Barangay Captain of Zone II, delivered a warm welcome message. She expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the organizers, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in supporting the community's welfare and development. She acknowledged the partnership between the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the SLSU University Library, highlighting how collaborations between educational institutions and local communities create positive, lasting impacts.
The event proceeded with the separate learning sessions for children and parents. The children were guided by University Library personnel, headed by Ms. Geanrose L. Colonia, MS. The kids participated in an enjoyable storytelling activity that emphasized values and awareness of food and healthy living. Afterward, they participated in a fun, interactive coloring session that allowed them to express their creativity while learning.
Simultaneously, the parents attended educational talks facilitated by invited speakers specializing in nutrition, family health, and food preparation. Ms. Alma M. Arnejo, MSc, discussed "Healthy Eating Starts at Home: Affordable Nutrition for Families." She emphasized budget-friendly strategies in preparing nutritious meals and making wise food choices. Ms. Karyn Mae P. Galleto followed with her topic, "The Role of Parents in Promoting Food Security and Good Nutrition," highlighting how parents play a critical role in shaping children's eating habits and ensuring access to adequate, nutritious food. Finally, Mr. Kent Ian Torion shared "Safe and Clean Food for the Family: Hospitality Standards You Can Apply at Home," demonstrating basic hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent foodborne illnesses. After the sessions, the children were served healthy snacks, allowing them to enjoy a nutritious meal aligned with the lessons taught during the program.
Before the event concluded, Barangay Captain Hon. Marilou Acapulco Llevares delivered her message of gratitude, once again acknowledging the organizers' efforts in conducting a meaningful and educational activity for their community. A photo opportunity followed, capturing the collaborative spirit and shared joy of the participants, organizers, and speakers.
The outreach program ended on a positive and uplifting note. The participants, especially the parents and children, expressed their appreciation for the knowledge, support, and care extended to them. This event not only celebrated World Food Day but also strongly embodied its purpose, raising awareness on the importance of nutritious food and strengthening community involvement toward achieving food security and healthier lifestyles.
