Little Voices, Global Stories: SLSU Brings Language Enrichment to Brgy. Libas Day Care Center

The External Linkages and International Affairs (ELIA) Office, in partnership with the Graduate School, successfully conducted a language enrichment outreach program titled “Little Voices, Global Stories – A Language Enrichment Outreach Program” at Brgy. Libas Day Care Center, Sogod, on October 1, 2025.
The event was led by Prof. Mary Ann M. Miller, English Language Fellow, who facilitated an engaging storytelling session titled “Tales and Treasures.” The activity was joined by Dr. Ingrid M. Uy (Director, ELIA), Dr. Marie Khul C. Langub (Vice President for Students and Auxiliary Services), Ms. Irene Marcel H. Lagua (Head, Academe-Industry Linkages), Mr. Mark Donald S. Oja (Director of Instruction), and Dr. James Brian Flores (Director of Quality Assurance). Also present were SLSU graduate students, KF21 Ambassadors, barangay officials from Libas, and the Daycare teacher, all of whom contributed to the success of the initiative.
Children enthusiastically participated in interactive storytelling, songs, games, and creative activities such as coloring storybooks, including “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” Meanwhile, parents attended a language development session where they learned practical strategies to support their children’s learning at home. The event concluded with a feeding program that promoted holistic child development through both educational and nutritional support.
The outreach aimed to build children’s confidence in using both English and Cebuano, nurture their imagination and creativity, and foster intercultural understanding through engagement with an international fellow. It also empowered parents and provided graduate students with meaningful, applied learning experiences in education, communication, and community extension.
By integrating Internationalization-at-Home into grassroots initiatives, Southern Leyte State University advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promotes inclusive local development, thereby bridging education, culture, and community in a shared learning experience.
