Strengthening Agricultural Research: SLSU-Hinunangan Partners with CALCOA COOP

Faculty members of Southern Leyte State University – Hinunangan Campus (SLSU-HC) recently conducted a benchmarking visit to the Cabintan Livelihood Community Agriculture Cooperative (CALCOA COOP) in Purok 3, Barangay Cabintan, Ormoc City, Leyte on January 22, 2025. This initiative aims to explore smart farming technologies and best practices in vegetable production, furthering a collaborative research project involving all academic programs at SLSU-HC.
The delegation was led by Campus Director Mr. Wade Lim, College Dean Dr. John Paul Gapasin, Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES) Head Dr. Ian Navarrete, and Extension Services Coordinator Ms. Fe Dalangin, Ms. Ana Mae Aquino, and Mr. Norman Claridad. The team was warmly received by CALCOA COOP Business Manager Mr. Rodel Morales, who facilitated a guided tour of the cooperative's operations and shared insights on sustainable crop production systems.
CALCOA COOP is engaged in various agricultural activities, including crop production under both protective and open-field systems, agricultural supply distribution, and retail services for institutional buyers. Their innovative farming methods align with emerging smart agriculture trends, integrating technology-driven solutions to enhance productivity and sustainability.
Dr. John Paul Gapasin emphasized the significance of this benchmarking activity, stating, “This visit provides an excellent opportunity for SLSU-HC to gain valuable insights into smart farming techniques that can be integrated into our research and extension programs. Collaborating with CALCOA COOP strengthens our commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and community development.”
The benchmarking initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). By integrating smart farming technologies into its academic and research programs, SLSU-HC reaffirms its commitment to nurturing agricultural innovation, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment.
