SLSU Bontoc Faculty Engage in Cutting-Edge Bioinformatics with ASMAR8
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Bontoc Campus was proudly represented by Assistant Professor Carlo Cabillo and Mr. Gladwin Goc-ong at the Philippine Genome Center Satellite Facility in the Visayas (PGC Visayas) extension project titled “Amplicon Sequencing Made Available for Region 8” (ASMAR8), held at UP Tacloban, Tacloban City, Leyte, on November 20-22, 2024.
The goal of #ASMAR8 is to strengthen the PGC Visayas Consortium in Region 8, facilitate the development of research projects in collaboration with consortium members, and provide an opportunity to practice molecular biology techniques, including amplicon sequencing.
Asst. Prof. Cabillo, a specialist in Horticulture, and Mr. Goc-ong, with expertise in Plant Pathology, actively participated in the event, which focused on bioinformatics tools and their application to molecular research.
The collaboration between SLSU Bontoc and PGC Visayas through the ASMAR8 project also highlights the importance of fostering partnerships in the region, ensuring that academic institutions are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to address local challenges in agriculture, plant health, and biotechnology.
The ASMAR8 workshop offered valuable opportunities for researchers and educators like Prof. Cabillo and Mr. Goc-ong to enhance their skills in data analysis and molecular techniques, which they can integrate into their ongoing research and teaching.
This initiative further solidifies the role of SLSU Bontoc in the development of cutting-edge research and educational opportunities within the Visayas region.
This initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
