ITSO Holds IP Awareness and Research Innovation Seminar for FoodTech and CompE Students
The Intellectual Property and Technology Support Office of Southern Leyte State University conducted a seminar titled “IP Awareness and Research Innovation: Guiding Students from Ideas to Protection” on March 12, 2026, at the Mini Theater. The activity was attended by students from the Food Technology and Computer Engineering programs, aiming to enhance their understanding of intellectual property (IP) and its role in supporting research, innovation, and technological development.

The program commenced with registration, followed by the National Anthem and Opening Prayer presented through multimedia. The event formally opened with a welcome message from Mr. Ramil Claros, who highlighted the significance of intellectual property awareness in fostering creativity, responsible research, and innovation among students in technology-related disciplines. An inspirational message was delivered by Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services. In her address, she encouraged students to actively engage in research and innovation while emphasizing the importance of protecting their intellectual creations and respecting the rights of others.
The seminar featured a series of informative discussions from resource speakers. Cyrene A. Napoles delivered Topic 1: “The IP System in Action: Protecting Your Ideas and Respecting Others’ Rights,” where participants were introduced to the fundamentals of intellectual property and its importance in safeguarding creative works, research outputs, and technological innovations.

Rio Katrina C. Avila facilitated the succeeding sessions. She presented Topic 2: “From Research Idea to Protectable Innovation,” which guided students on transforming research concepts into potential innovations with intellectual property value. She also discussed Topic 3: “Novelty Search and Navigating IP Databases,” introducing students to essential techniques in conducting novelty searches and utilizing IP databases to verify originality and explore existing technologies.
Through this seminar, the ITSO reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intellectual property awareness and innovation literacy among students. By integrating IP education with research and innovation practices, the initiative supports the university’s mission of producing industry-ready, research-oriented, and innovation-driven graduates.
