SLSU Launches “aDOORn Your DOOR: From Dustbin to Décor” — A Celebration of Creativity and Sustainability
Southern Leyte State University – Main Campus has officially launched “aDOORn your DOOR: From Dustbin to Décor,” a sustainability-centered Christmas initiative that brings together creativity, environmental responsibility, and the festive spirit. Aligned with the university’s vision of becoming a smart, green, and globally recognized institution, the activity encourages all offices to convert waste materials into meaningful holiday decorations, proving that responsible practices and artistic expression can go hand in hand.
This green initiative invites participants to design their office doors using recycled, upcycled, or eco-friendly materials—ranging from plastic bottles and tin cans to scrap paper, fabric remnants, biodegradable items, and other discarded materials reimagined as décor. By discouraging newly purchased plastic decorations and promoting the creative reuse of available items, the project strengthens the university’s commitment to the principles of the circular economy and supports global sustainability goals, particularly SDG 11, SDG 12, and SDG 13. It also reflects the UI GreenMetric Waste Indicators, reinforcing SLSU’s broader efforts toward campus-wide waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable operational practices.
A total of twenty-seven (27) offices enthusiastically joined the activity, showcasing both unity and creativity across the campus. These include the Accounting and Budget Offices; Bids and Awards Committee; Business Affairs and Resource Generation Office; Cashier Office; Civil Engineering Department; Electrical Engineering Department; Faculty of Computing & Information Sciences; Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism & Management; Faculty of Education, Technology, & Innovation; Faculty of Industrial & Technology Management; Gender and Development Office; General Services Office; Graduate School; Hotel De SLSU; Human Resource Management & Development Office; Internal Audit Office; Learning Commons and Library Services Office; Health Services Office; Office of the University President; VPAA and VPAF Offices; VPRIES Office; VPSESS Office; Public Affairs & Strategic Communications Office; Records Office; University Registrar Office; University Information System & Analytics Office; and the University Planning and Development Office.
Through collaboration and shared effort, each participating office transformed its door into an expression of hope, ingenuity, and sustainability. The activity fostered camaraderie among employees as they worked together to conceptualize and install eco-inspired Christmas designs that reflected their identity while embodying SLSU’s core values. The decorations will remain displayed throughout the holiday season, contributing to a warm and vibrant campus atmosphere that celebrates both environmental advocacy and the joy of Christmas.
Entries will be judged based on creativity, environmental impact, teamwork, and their alignment with SLSU’s mission and values. Winners will be announced during the SLSU Faculty and Staff Christmas Party and may be featured on the university’s official website and social media pages as exemplary sustainability projects. Beyond the competition, “aDOORn your DOOR: From Dustbin to Décor” serves as an important model of how even small, low-cost initiatives can significantly reinforce a culture of green leadership across the university.
As SLSU continues to champion environmentally conscious programs and strengthen its standing in global sustainability frameworks, this initiative highlights the power of community involvement in achieving long-term environmental goals. The decorated doors across the Main Campus now stand as creative reminders that sustainability begins with everyday decisions—transforming what was once waste into something beautiful, meaningful, and inspiring.
