SHARE Center Mandate
1. Basic, strategic and applied research to enhance sustainable productivity, quality and utilization of rubber, cacao, coffee, coconut, abaca, other locally adapted high value crops, poultry and livestock (duck, native chicken, water buffalo and goat)
2. Repository of rubber, cacao and other high-valued crops genetic resources and scientific information,
3. Transfer of technology, capacity building and impact assessment of technologies deployed to smallholder communities,
4. Coordinate research and validation of technologies on smallholder horticulture and agroforestry system.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The Smallholder Horticulture and Agroforestry Research & Extension Center (SHARE), located at Hinunangan, Southern Leyte, Philippines, is the first research center of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU). This 68-hectare campus includes an experimental fruit tree project (mango, jackfruit, rambutan, citrus) and clonal source bush nursery (rubber, cacao, coffee); forest park, forage garden, coconut plantation, rubber intercropping, vermi-composting facility, goat house, poultry, buffalo and other livestock. Some of the existing land uses shall be transformed into techno-demo farms and learning sites where an observation tower shall be built to provide a scenic view of the twin Islands of San Pedro and San Pablo from the east, the town center and Das-ay River in the south, westward Kadak-an ricefield with back dropped hills and mountains to the historic and mystic Mount Talinis and downstream communities to the north. Through the Center’s initiative, a 68-hectare campus will transform into a seed production center and farm tourism hub of Eastern Visayas.
Located near the buffer zones of Mount Nacolod Key Biodiversity Area mostly occupied by agrarian reform communities speaks of an ideal scientific setting for development of horticultural- and agroforestry-related studies. Interdisciplinary cooperation allows researchers from multiple disciplines, including entomology, horticulture, agronomy, animal science, soil science, ecology, agroforestry, agribusiness and human dimensions to combine research efforts to address an array of issues. Integrated studies of crop, livestock and forestry practices are occurring, as is the development of resilient clones for selected plantation crops supported by an arboretum as germplasm collection of high-valued crops for food production and other industrial uses.
SHARE being the only research center of CAFES will become a network of project sites along the buffer zones of hosting state-of-the-art programs that will bring Southern Leyte’s agricultural land and uplanders’ new information for reaching maximum income potential and environmental benefits on a variety of cropping systems and livestock integration across different agro-climatic conditions.
GOAL AND OBJECTIVES:
Goal 1:
Produce R&D outputs to improve productivity, quality and profitability of smallholder production venture
Objectives:
1. Conduct RDE PPAs that improves cultivation of market-oriented crops and livestock which are popularly grown and domesticated under a smallholder condition;
2. Catalogue, screen and develop resilient clones for the region; and
3. Evolve effective control measures against major pests and diseases associated to smallholder farming system;
Goal 2:
Diffuse recommended technologies to enhance smallholder horticulture and agroforestry systems
Objectives:
1. Produce quality planting materials of recommended high value and market-driven crops;
2. Activate information support platforms for agribusiness development and enhancement; and
3. Transfer the technologies following the standards on good agricultural practices (GAP)
