SLSU – Tomas Oppus BSBA Department Launches Project AMUMA to Boost Financial Literacy
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Tomas Oppus Business Administration (BSBA) Department has officially launched Project AMUMA (Advancing Monetary Understanding and Management) in Tomas Oppus, which focuses on enhancing financial literacy among local farmers and fisherfolk. The training kicked off on September 16, 2024, with simultaneous sessions held in Brgy. Camansi, Brgy. Rizal, and Brgy. Mapgap.
The BSBA Department organized the training by dividing its members into three distinct groups, with each group assigned to one of the target barangays. Project AMUMA aims to provide valuable financial knowledge and skills to the agricultural and fishing communities in Tomas Oppus. The initiative, supported by the Landbank Countryside Development Foundation, Inc., seeks to address the financial challenges faced by these marginalized groups by offering practical solutions on managing income and expenses.
Attendees were introduced to various topics including differentiating between needs and wants, managing expenses and understanding cash flow, evaluating risks and implementing risk management strategies, navigating market challenges, and making informed decisions on money and production, comparing interest rates from different banks, including Landbank and identifying potential schemes and scams that could affect their finances.
Following the lectures, participants engaged in a hands-on workshop designed to help them plan and manage their income and expenses more effectively. This event marks the beginning of a week-long series of training sessions scheduled to cover all barangays within the LGU Tomas Oppus. The project is intended to significantly uplift the financial and economic literacy of the local fisherfolk and farmers, equipping them with the tools needed for better financial decision-making and management. Through Project AMUMA, the SLSU – Tomas Oppus BSBA Department aims to make a lasting impact on the economic stability and growth of the municipalities of Southern Leyte.
This initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By improving financial literacy and economic management, Project AMUMA contributes to poverty reduction, food security, and sustainable economic growth in the region.
