Another remarkable accomplishment of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) is the conduct of the extension project “Journey and Knowledge: Becoming a Skilled Tour Guide” for the Municipality of Hinunangan last March 18-21, 2025. The extension project was specifically tailored to the local tour guides of the different barangays as part of the LGUs strong drive to promote tourism in the municipality.
The 4-day comprehensive training on local tour guiding was spearheaded by Dr. Jasmin S. Dayunan as the Project Leader, together with faculty-extensionists of the FHTM and Faculty of Criminal Justice (FCJ). The training included overview of tourism industry and tour guiding; developing communication skills, handling difficult situation, and personality development for tour guides; tour planning and execution; and crisis management and basic first aid. The trainees participated in engaging activities such as communication exercises, onsite tour guiding simulation, and basic first aid drill. With these, the participants appreciated the significance of the project to promote their community as a sustainable tourism destination.
This project was one of the many extension undertakings of the FHTM with the Municipality of Hinunangan. LGU Hinunangan is an active partner of the university since 2020 in terms of capacitating their constituents in the different aspects of hospitality and tourism management. This addresses UN SDGs on sustainable cities and communities (11), and partnership for the goals (17).
In her concluding words, the Tourism Officer expressed gratitude to SLSU for being responsive to the needs of the community. Further, she also manifested on behalf of the participants their firm resolve to apply what they learned during the training-workshop.
