SLSU–Hinunangan hosts launch of Mobile Soil Lab, Bridging Agricultural Gaps

The official launching of the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) Mobile Soil Laboratory (MSL) was held at Southern Leyte State University – Hinunangan Campus on March 26, 2026. The event marked a significant milestone in advancing soil health research and environmental education in the region.

Among the key figures present were University President Dr. Jude Duarte, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services Dr. Francis Ann Sy, SLSU–Bontoc Campus Director Dr. Dewoowogen Baclayon, and RIES Head Mr. Wade C. Lim. Notable government and local officials, including Board Member Hon. Roland Bacoy, Congressman Christopherson ‘Coco’ Yap, Hon. Aida Bulingit of LGU-Hinunangan, Mr. Crisanto Bual of LGU-Hinundayan, and Mayor Lemuel Honor of LGU-Silago, were also in attendance.

The event brought together officials from the Regional Soil Laboratory (RSL), led by Ms. Ma. Kris V. Tolentino, and the Mobile Soil Laboratory team, to guide the activities and facilitate training sessions. Farmers from Hinundayan, Hinunangan, and Silago participated in the event alongside students from the BS Environmental Science (BSES), agriculture, and agribusiness programs at SLSU–Hinunangan.

The Mobile Soil Laboratory, a modern and compact unit designed to conduct on-site soil testing, is equipped with the latest soil test kits to help farmers assess soil quality and nutrient levels. The MSL features a range of equipment for rapid soil testing, allowing for the analysis of key soil properties such as pH, nutrient levels, and organic matter content. These tools provide essential data that can guide sustainable farming practices, promote soil health, and enhance crop productivity.

One of the highlights of the event was the hands-on training on soil test kits, where attendees were able to learn about the practical application of the technology. Discussions on soil nutrient management also provided valuable insights into improving soil quality and boosting agricultural yields. Additionally, the introduction to the FertRight application offered farmers and students a digital tool to assist in soil management and fertilizer application decisions.

Dr. Jude Duarte, President of SLSU, highlighted the significance of the Mobile Soil Laboratory for local farmers during his acceptance speech:

“SLSU–Hinunangan, as our agriculture campus, has always been grounded in the realities of the land. We understand that for any of our farmers, access to timely and accurate soil analysis can mean the difference between uncertainty and productivity, between subsistence and sustainability. With MSL, we take significant steps towards bridging that gap,” Dr. Duarte said.

Clifford Arandia, a 4th-year student from the BS Environmental Science program at SLSU, expressed his excitement about the event:

“It’s amazing to see such a valuable resource like the Mobile Soil Laboratory here at SLSU. As an environmental science student, this hands-on experience with the soil testing kit is invaluable for my future career,” said Arandia.

The event underscored SLSU–Hinunangan’s commitment to agricultural innovation, sustainable land management, and community engagement. By hosting such initiatives, the university is aligning with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), working toward food security, soil health, and sustainable farming practices. The MSL initiative also supports the university’s goal of providing cutting-edge research and education, empowering local farmers with the tools they need for sustainable agricultural development.

The collaboration between SLSU–Hinunangan, local government units, and the Department of Agriculture is a key step in fostering greater partnerships for regional agricultural development and resilience, providing students, farmers, and communities with the knowledge and resources to thrive.
