SLSU–Hinunangan Bolsters Livestock Quality, Reinforces Strategic Collaboration with PCC–VSU

The Philippine Carabao Center at Visayas State University (PCC–VSU) conducted a comprehensive monitoring visit, animal health assessment, and nutrition-related evaluation of dairy buffaloes stationed at the Southern Leyte State University – Hinunangan Campus on February 24, 2026, further strengthening institutional collaboration in dairy buffalo development and livestock production in Eastern Visayas.

Led by Mr. Renato Briones of PCC–VSU, in coordination with livestock supervisor Mart John M. Goyo of SLSU-Hinunangan, the activity involved routine health examinations, assessment of feeding systems, and evaluation of overall herd management practices. Farm workers and OJT interns actively participated in the technical procedures, gaining hands-on experience in animal health monitoring and nutrition management. The team provided science-based recommendations to enhance milk productivity, animal welfare, and farm efficiency.

The initiative underscores SLSU–Hinunangan’s role not only as a production unit but as a living laboratory for instruction, research, and extension. It directly supports the university’s Vision of becoming a leading higher education institution committed to inclusive growth and sustainable development, and its Mission to provide quality instruction, generate relevant research, and deliver responsive extension services. By integrating technical expertise from PCC–VSU into campus-based operations, SLSU advances its Goals of academic excellence, industry linkage, and community engagement.

Moreover, the activity contributes to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Strengthened dairy production supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by enhancing local food security and nutrition, promotes SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through sustainable livestock management practices, and advances SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by reinforcing institutional collaboration between national agencies and higher education institutions.

Through sustained partnership, capacity-building, and adherence to high standards of animal welfare and productivity, SLSU–Hinunangan continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable agricultural development, regional resilience, and transformative education aligned with global development frameworks.
