SLSU–Hinunangan Faculty Joins 49th Southeast Asia Seminar on Global Disruptions

Southern Leyte State University–Hinunangan Campus was represented at the 49th Southeast Asia Seminar, held from November 19 to 24, 2025, in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, Cambodia, through the participation of Prof. Ian A. Navarrete.

Organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) of Kyoto University, the annual seminar convened early-career researchers from across the region to engage in critical discussions on the theme “Global Disruptions and Southeast Asia: Exploring Histories, Narratives, and Transdisciplinary Challenges.”

The seminar provided an interdisciplinary platform for examining the growing impacts of global disruptions on Southeast Asia, including climate change, economic volatility, and political transformations. By integrating Area Studies, which situates local and regional contexts within broader global processes, and Transdisciplinary Studies, which encourages collaboration across academic fields, the program emphasized holistic approaches to complex regional issues.

Throughout the five-day seminar, participants engaged in intensive lectures, workshops, and group discussions to develop research proposals that address contemporary global challenges. Emphasis was placed on producing research outputs with practical relevance, particularly those that can contribute to sustainable development initiatives in Southeast Asia.

Prof. Navarrete’s participation highlights the Philippines’ active engagement in international academic exchanges and knowledge-building initiatives. His involvement further strengthens SLSU–Hinunangan Campus’ role in advancing scholarly collaboration and contributing to regional and global conversations on sustainability and development.

The activity supports the attainment of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting advanced learning and research capacity, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through inclusive regional collaboration, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by fostering interdisciplinary research on climate-related challenges.
