SLSU Goes “OA” for Sustainability, Bags Honors in Regional Quiz Bee

To mark the observance of Organic Agriculture Month, the Agricultural Training Institute–Regional Training Center VIII (ATI–RTC 8) spearheaded the 2025 Regional Kabataang OA Quiz Bee, carrying the theme “Kabuhayang OA, Kinabukasang OK! Halina at Kumita sa Organikong Agrikultura.” The regional competition convened student representatives from various State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) across Eastern Visayas, showcasing the enthusiasm and increasing involvement of young agricultural scholars in advancing sustainable and organic farming initiatives.

The regional competition gathered participants from six (6) SUCs across Region VIII, including Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), Eastern Visayas State University–Burauen Campus (EVSU–Burauen), Southern Leyte State University (SLSU)–Hinunangan and Bontoc Campuses, Northwestern Samar State University (NWSSU), and Visayas State University–Isabel Campus (VSU–Isabel).

Held at the ATI–RTC 8 grounds inside Visayas State University in Baybay City, the activity formed part of ATI’s continuing efforts to promote awareness and appreciation of organic agriculture—a vital component of the country’s sustainable development agenda. The quiz bee tested the students’ knowledge of organic farming principles, government policies, and the latest trends and technologies that support ecological agriculture.

Representing Southern Leyte State University–Hinunangan Campus were third-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students Jerwin T. Tolibas and Joriz Xandre J. Ladores, together with Julian T. Redondo from SLSU–Bontoc Campus. The SLSU delegates showcased their expertise and commitment to organic agriculture throughout the competition, proudly bringing recognition to their institution.

In the final results, Tolibas placed 5th among the regional contenders, while Redondo from SLSU–Bontoc secured an impressive 3rd place finish, both receiving certificates and cash prizes for their exemplary performance. The strong showing of SLSU’s representatives underscored the university’s emphasis on quality agricultural education and its role in nurturing competent and environmentally aware future agriculturists.

Reflecting on his experience, Tolibas expressed pride and gratitude for the opportunity to represent his campus at the regional level. “Joining the Kabataang OA Quiz Bee was both a challenge and an inspiration,” he said. “It made me realize how organic agriculture connects directly to the future of farming and food security. We, the younger generation, have a responsibility to continue learning and to promote sustainable practices that protect our environment and support our communities.”

ATI–RTC 8 Regional Director commended all participating SUCs and lauded the efforts of the student contestants for their enthusiasm in promoting organic agriculture. The director emphasized that the youth play a crucial role in transforming the agricultural landscape of the country and in achieving the goals of sustainable development.

SLSU–Hinunangan’s active participation in the regional competition aligns with the university’s mission to advance sustainable agricultural education, research, and extension services. The initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Action, by advocating for resilient and eco-friendly agricultural systems.

As one of the leading agricultural institutions in Region VIII, SLSU continues to champion organic and sustainable agriculture, empowering its students to become advocates of environmental stewardship and innovation. The university’s participation in activities such as the Kabataang OA Quiz Bee strengthens its commitment to cultivating future agricultural leaders who are not only skilled and knowledgeable but also deeply committed to building a greener and more sustainable future for all.
