SLSU–Maasin City Campus conducts Hands-On Data Mining seminar-writeshop
A two-day hands-on seminar-writeshop on data mining was conducted on March 25–26, 2026, at SLSU–Maasin City Campus, with the active participation of 17 faculty members. The activity was facilitated by Dr. Rhoderick Malangsa, who served as the Resource Expert and provided technical inputs and guidance throughout the sessions.

The seminar aimed to enhance the faculty’s knowledge and skills in producing publishable research papers using data mining methods. Specifically, participants were introduced to Association Rule Analysis using the Apriori Algorithm and Classification Analysis using the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) Algorithm applied to large datasets. They were also trained in navigating web-based tools such as Weka and Kaggle for performing rule-based and classification analyses.

During the afternoon session of the first day, participants were grouped according to their fields of specialization and research interests. Each group explored relevant large datasets where they could apply association rule or classification analysis.

On the second day, each group presented their research outputs for critique and feedback from the resource expert. A total of four research outputs were presented, which will undergo further refinement before submission for final review and possible publication.
This initiative supports the university’s commitment to strengthening research productivity and generating new knowledge through scholarly work. The activity concluded with a message of support and commitment from the RIES Head, Michael Malachy D. Dagami.
