SLSU-TO SciMathSoc Leads Career Talk in Science Month 2025

The Science and Mathematics Society (SciMathSoc) of Southern Leyte State University - Tomas Oppus Campus led the symposium “Career Talk: Meet a Scientist” on September 17, 2025, at the campus covered court as part of the Science Month Celebration 2025. Anchored on the theme “SPATIALYZE: Surveying Societies, Sensing Solutions,” the event aimed to promote scientific awareness and encourage dialogue on pressing health and research concerns.
The program began with an opening message from Campus Director Dr. Clemente H. Cobilla, who underscored the importance of scientific inquiry in addressing societal challenges. His remarks highlighted the symposium's role in cultivating a culture of curiosity and innovation among students and faculty.
To set a tone, two freshmen members of the Science and Mathematics Society delivered a vocal duet, showcasing the artistic talents and enthusiasm of the student body. The symposium featured Dr. Joy Ann Petronio Santos, Scientist I and University Researcher I at the Natural Sciences Research Institute, University of the Philippines-Diliman, as the keynote speaker. She was formally introduced by Dr. Dana D. Lim, who presented Dr. Santos’s academic background and research accomplishments.
In her lecture titled “A Molecular Approach to Addressing the HIV Epidemic in the Philippines,” Dr. Santos provided a comprehensive overview of HIV biology, its global and local epidemiological context, and the mechanisms by which the virus progresses to AIDS. She discussed current biomarkers used in HIV diagnostics, as well as the technological and logistical challenges faced in the Philippine healthcare system.
An open forum followed the presentation, allowing students and faculty to engage with Dr. Santos through thoughtful questions. Her responses reflected both scientific rigor and a deep commitment to public health advocacy. Additionally, members of the Science Faculty, including Dr. Cobilla, had the opportunity to discuss possible collaborations with Dr. Santos.
The event concluded with a photo opportunity, where attendees gathered to commemorate the occasion with Dr. Santos. The Science and Mathematics Society expressed its hope that the symposium inspired participants to pursue scientific inquiry and recognize the transformative power of research in addressing societal needs.
The 2025 Science Month Celebration continues with a series of activities designed to promote interdisciplinary learning, community engagement, and a deeper appreciation for science and mathematics.
