SLSU Bontoc and Scouts Unite for Coastal and Environmental Conservation

In a continuing effort to promote environmental stewardship, the Extension Services Office of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Bontoc Campus conducted an Orientation-Seminar on the Importance of Mangroves, followed by a mangrove planting activity, on January 30-31, 2026, at Sogod National High School Dance Studio.

The seminar was held in conjunction with “Project Puno: Planting Seeds for Our Future”, an environmental initiative organized by the host school. The activity aimed to enhance environmental awareness, strengthen coastal protection efforts, and encourage active youth participation in ecological conservation.

Asst. Professor Jimmy E. Salamida, SLSU Bontoc Extension Coordinator, served as Resource Speaker during the seminar. He emphasized the ecological significance of mangroves in maintaining biodiversity, preventing coastal erosion, and supporting local livelihoods.

Highlighting the theme, “Together, we grow a greener tomorrow!”, Mr. Salamida encouraged participants to translate knowledge into action within their schools and communities.

“Lush green mangroves are more than just coastal vegetation. They are guardians of our shores, protectors of marine life, and vital partners in the fight against climate change,” Salamida added.

On the second day of this two-day event, January 31, participants took part in a hands-on field activity, planting mangrove seedlings along the local coastline in Barangay St. Niño Bontoc, Southern Leyte.

The program brought together secondary school teachers, student leaders, and scouts, including Girl Scouts, Senior Scouts, and Rover Scouts, alongside their mentors. Through interactive discussions and hands-on learning, participants were equipped with practical strategies to contribute to environmental conservation efforts in their localities.

This initiative was made possible through the collaboration of SLSU Bontoc, Sogod National High School, LGU-Bontoc, and the Foundation for These-Abled Persons, Inc. The seminar underscores SLSU Bontoc’s commitment to fostering environmental responsibility, community engagement, and sustainable development among the youth and educators of Southern Leyte.

Through programs such as this, the university continues to champion initiatives that protect natural resources while cultivating a generation of informed and responsible environmental stewards.

This initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 13 – Climate Action, SDG 14 – Life Below Water, SDG 15 – Life on Land, SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
