SLSU Bontoc Students champion at FISHCORE Exhibit

Southern Leyte State University–Bontoc Campus proudly took part in the FISHCORE Exhibit: Raising Awareness on Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency Art Competition – Regional Selection, held on April 25, 2025, at the Sogod Municipal Grounds, Sogod, Southern Leyte.
The event, led by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region VIII (BFAR-R8) and facilitated by the Municipal Agriculture Service Office, forms part of the FishCoRe Project under the Department of Agriculture. It aims to raise public consciousness on the vital role of fisheries and the importance of building resilient coastal communities.
In an impressive display of talent and environmental advocacy, two SLSU-Bontoc students stood out among the participants and bagged home top awards.
Rhoegie Ybanez, a 4th-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology (BSMB) student, clinched 1st Place in the competition. Ybanez beaming with pride as he prepares to represent Region VIII in the upcoming national-level exhibit. His winning piece showcased not only artistic flair but also a deep understanding of marine sustainability and coastal protection.
Joining him on the winners’ podium is Michelle Muñez, a promising 1st-year Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (BSFi) student, who earned 2nd Place. Michelle’s artwork reflected her passion for fisheries and her growing dedication to environmental stewardship.
They were joined by fellow homegrown student artists Reca B. Saavedra (BSFi-3), Donabel L. Junio (BSA-4), and Aerol Kate T. Bantaculo (BSMB-3), and Diana Q. Salva (BSFi-3) who also represented SLSU–Bontoc with pride. These students contributed powerful visual narratives that reflected themes of marine conservation, community resilience, and the vital role of youth in environmental advocacy. Their participation highlighted the depth of talent within the campus and underscored the university’s strong support for integrating creative expression into the promotion of fisheries and coastal sustainability.
The participation and success of SLSU Bontoc students in the FISHCORE Exhibit not only celebrate their individual talents but also reflect the campus’s dedication to shaping environmentally conscious leaders. Through art, these students have amplified critical messages about marine protection and coastal resilience—reminding us that youth voices are powerful agents of change. As the journey continues to the national stage, SLSU–Bontoc stands united in pride and support, ready to champion sustainable seas through education, creativity, and community spirit.
