SLSU FAS conducts Community Outreach at BJMP Sogod District Jail

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, particularly the Mathematics, Statistics, and Physical and Biological Sciences Unit (MSPBS), successfully conducted the SHARE: Sharing Hygiene Resources and Essentials for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) Community Outreach Activity on February 24, 2026, at the BJMP–Sogod District Jail.

The BJMP–Sogod District Jail is a valued partner agency of the University under an existing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), reflecting a sustained collaboration anchored on service, empowerment, and inclusive community development.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Aldwin Teves, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, emphasized that meaningful education extends beyond classroom instruction and research, it reaches communities and uplifts lives through purposeful engagement. The Statement of Purpose was delivered by Frances Nicole Espinosa, RIES Coordinator, who highlighted that the SHARE initiative was designed not only to provide hygiene essentials but also to affirm the dignity and worth of persons deprived of liberty.

As part of the outreach activity, the Faculty provided livelihood support materials such as dishwashing production kits, bottles, and stickers as a follow-through to the training conducted last December. The produced items are intended for display and sale during the upcoming SLSU Anniversary celebration, with proceeds directly benefiting the PDL participants. The Faculty encourages the university community to support these products as a way of promoting rehabilitation, productivity, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Food items were also brought and prepared during the activity, fostering a spirit of fellowship and shared experience.

An intermission number performed by selected PDL participants added warmth to the program, showcasing their talents and reinforcing the value of inclusion and encouragement.

The gift-giving was facilitated by faculty members, symbolizing solidarity and care from the academic community. In his closing remarks, JSINSP Elizer Bacog, Jail Warden, expressed gratitude for the continued partnership and acknowledged the positive impact of such initiatives on the morale and well-being of the PDL community.

The activity concluded with a photo opportunity, capturing meaningful moments of collaboration and shared purpose.

Through SHARE, Southern Leyte State University once again demonstrated that extension services are not merely institutional obligations but expressions of compassion in action, affirming that transformation begins through partnership, empathy, and sustained community engagement.
