Beyond the Classroom: SLSU Bontoc Campus Interns Gain Hands-On Aquaculture Experience
For interns at SLSU-Bontoc Campus, learning goes beyond the four walls of the classroom. Some of the most meaningful lessons happen when students roll up their sleeves, handle actual equipment, step into the field, and experience firsthand how knowledge applies in real-world settings.

On July 3, 2026, the interns take part in practical training on laboratory operations and equipment handling. This activity familiarizes them with proper laboratory practices and the use of essential equipment. Beyond teaching procedures, the experience strengthens their technical skills, builds confidence, and prepares them for the demands of their future professions.

Their hands-on learning journey continues from July 6 to 10, 2026, with direct exposure to tilapia and milkfish aquaculture operations. Through active involvement in these activities, the interns gain a closer look at day-to-day operations and develop a deeper appreciation for responsible and sustainable practices in managing aquatic resources.
More than simply completing internship requirements, these experiences provide meaningful opportunities for the interns to learn by doing, develop new skills, and connect classroom knowledge with real-life applications. Each task and experience forms an important part of their growth as future professionals.

These initiatives also contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting experiential and skills-based learning; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, through career and workplace preparation; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by strengthening technical and scientific competencies; SDG 14: Life Below Water, through exposure to responsible and sustainable aquaculture practices; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering international academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Adding a global dimension to the internship experience, SLSU-Bontoc Campus also warmly welcomes an international intern from Ghent University, Belgium. The university looks forward to a meaningful journey of learning, cultural exchange, and shared experiences throughout the internship.

From the laboratory to the aquaculture field, these interns do not simply watch from the sidelines—they learn, do, and grow. Their journey reflects the value of hands-on education in shaping skilled, responsible, and sustainability-driven future professionals.
