SLSU strengthens research edge through Bibliometric Analysis Training-Workshop

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), through the Office of Research, Innovation, and Publication Services, successfully conducted the Bibliometric Analysis Training-Workshop last June 18–19, 2026, at the RIES Training Hall, bringing together faculty researchers and staff for a meaningful two-day learning experience designed to strengthen research competencies, scholarly writing skills, and publication readiness.

With the fast-changing landscape of research and publication, the training-workshop provided participants with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in bibliometric analysis, an emerging and powerful tool used to map research trends, identify relevant and timely topics, analyze scholarly publications, and develop data-driven research directions. Through guided workshop sessions, participants explored how bibliometric techniques can help them craft stronger research outputs, improve publication strategies, and contribute more effectively to the growing body of academic knowledge.

Dr. Melvin S. Sarsale served as the resource speaker for the activity, sharing his expertise on the key concepts, processes, and real-world applications of bibliometric analysis in research development. He guided the participants in understanding how research data, publication patterns, citation networks, and scholarly trends can be transformed into meaningful insights for research planning and writing. He was assisted by the Research Assistants, who provided technical and hands-on support throughout the workshop to ensure active participation and application of the tools introduced.

Engr. Khorina A. Tablada, Director for Research, Innovation, and Publication Services, warmly welcomed the participants and underscored the value of bibliometric analysis in today’s highly competitive research environment. She emphasized that equipping researchers with practical, relevant, and data-informed tools is a vital step in producing high-quality, globally visible, and impactful scholarly outputs.

Adding further inspiration to the activity, Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, Publication and Extension, delivered an encouraging message to the participants. She urged them to maximize the learning opportunity and recognize the growing importance of bibliometric analysis as one of the timely and highly relevant approaches in modern research. She also encouraged the participants to apply their learnings in developing stronger, evidence-based, and publication-worthy research outputs.

This initiative forms part of SLSU’s continuing commitment to advance research productivity, innovation, and scholarly excellence. It also supports the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting lifelong learning and research capacity-building; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by strengthening innovation-driven knowledge generation; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and institutional development.

More than a training-workshop, the activity served as a platform for empowering SLSU faculty researchers and staff to become more confident, data-informed, and globally competitive contributors to research and knowledge creation. Through initiatives like this, SLSU continues to cultivate a stronger research culture, one that turns ideas into insights, insights into publications, and publications into meaningful contributions to sustainable development.
