FHTM Students Shine Bright: A Journey of Excellence at WorldSkills Philippines Eastern Visayas 2026 Olympics

Tacloban City, May 21, 2026 — A group of dedicated BS Hospitality Management students from Southern Leyte State University showcases their skills and determination at the prestigious WorldSkills Philippines Eastern Visayas 2026 Regional Skills Olympics. The three-day event, held from May 19 to 21 at ACLC College of Tacloban, provides a remarkable platform for young talents to demonstrate their expertise in hotel reception and hospitality.

The journey commences on May 19 at 3:00 PM as the team departs from Southern Leyte State University, filled with a mix of excitement and anticipation. Upon arrival, participants, trainers, and supporters engage in final preparations, reviewing their skills and mentally gearing up for the upcoming challenges.

Day one fosters camaraderie as students from various institutions and regions gather to exchange experiences and build connections that transcend competition. The evening is dedicated to reviewing skills and strategizing for the next day’s rigorous activities.

On May 20, the official competition kicks off. BS Hospitality Management students representing Southern Leyte State University include Ashlee Althea Jhainne Etable, Klendyll Camille S. Mejala, Jasmine Toreña, Athea Nicole Comedia, Thricia Mae Landong, Mary Joy Boniza, Angel Rapada, and Stella Marie Pedere. They are mentored and guided by the BS Hospitality Management Program Head, Ms. Alma M. Arnejo, and the FHTM Dean, Dr. Dinah F. Catamco. They compete in the Hotel Reception category, demonstrating proficiency in front-office operations and qualities such as confidence, time management, creativity, and composure under pressure.

Despite the intense competition, the team gains invaluable experience, learning new techniques and sharpening their skills. Their dedication pays off as they navigate the challenges of the contest, exemplifying professionalism and teamwork.

The final day culminates in an awarding ceremony and closing program that celebrates the hard work and perseverance of all participants. Southern Leyte State University’s team proudly receives a silver medal in the Hotel Reception category—a testament to their skill and effort. While they do not secure the top spot, the achievement is regarded as a victory in growth and learning.

As they travel back home, the students carry with them not only lasting memories but also vital lessons in discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence. Participating in the regional skills Olympics is more than a competition; it is a transformative experience that fosters personal and professional development.
