SLSU-TO Holds 3rd Undergraduate Research Conference, Showcases Student Innovation

The Office of Research, Innovation, Publication, and Extension Services of Southern Leyte State University – Tomas Oppus Campus successfully conducts SIBYA 2026: 3rd Undergraduate Research Conference on May 13 at the SLSU-TO Mini Theater, bringing together student researchers from various academic disciplines to present innovative studies addressing emerging issues and societal challenges.

The annual conference serves as a platform for undergraduate students to showcase their research, exchange ideas, and foster a culture of academic inquiry, innovation, and collaboration within the university. Student researchers present studies spanning diverse fields, highlighting solutions and experiments that contribute to various sectors of society.

In his welcome address, Dr. Mark B. Galdo encourages participants to pursue their aspirations with determination, urging them to “dream high and aim big.” He emphasizes that perseverance and resilience remain essential in achieving meaningful success despite challenges encountered along the way.

Meanwhile, Engr. Khorina Aguilar-Tablada underscores the significance of research in everyday life. She highlights its vital role in shaping informed decision-making, driving innovation, and addressing community and institutional concerns.

The conference culminates in the recognition of outstanding student researchers and presenters for their exemplary research contributions and presentation skills.

For the Best Research Paper Award in the Information Technology category, the study “Filipino Audio to Baybayin Word Translation Using Deep Learning Algorithm” earns first place honors. In the Social Science Research category, the Mathematics Education Department’s study “Reducing Mathematics Anxiety Through Structured Problem-Based Learning: A Process-Oriented Explanation Using the 5Cs Framework” secures the top award. In the BioPhysical Research category, the Science Education Department’s study “Physico-Chemical Analysis of Potable Water from Different Sources” is recognized as the best research paper.

In the Best Presenter Award, Gardenia Concillo and Melca Abogado from the Information Technology Department clinch first place. Tying for second place are Erika Almoguera, Rhea Mae Galang, and Mythena Simangca from the English Education Department, alongside Margie Hermosilla from the Filipino Education Department. Marry Ann Geverola from the Mathematics Education Department earns third place.

In his closing message, Dr. Clemente Cobilla commends the students, faculty mentors, and organizers for the successful conduct of the conference. He emphasizes the importance of sustaining a strong research culture within the university and encourages students to continue pursuing innovative studies that create meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

The successful staging of SIBYA 2026 once again demonstrates Southern Leyte State University – Tomas Oppus Campus’ unwavering commitment to advancing research excellence, fostering innovation, and inspiring future scholars to contribute knowledge and solutions to real-world challenges. This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 and Sustainable Development Goal 9 by promoting quality education, research innovation, and knowledge-driven development.
