Southern Leyte State University Conducts Patent Drafting Workshop For Engineering Innovations
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), through its Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO), successfully conducts the Patent Drafting for Engineering Innovations: Transforming Completed Projects into Protectable Intellectual Property Assets on May 04, 2026, via the Zoom platform.

The whole-day activity, held from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, gathers faculty members, researchers, and students with the aim of equipping participants with essential knowledge and skills in drafting patents and protecting their innovations.
The program commences with the preliminaries, followed by the welcome message of Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, Publication, and Extension Services of SLSU. In her message, she highlights the importance of intellectual property protection in advancing research and innovation.

The first technical session is facilitated by Dr. Angel T. Sabusap, who discusses claims drafting and structuring, as well as the preparation of patent drawings. Participants gain valuable insights into properly defining the scope and visual representation of their inventions.
This is followed by Engr. Carmel Aniga, who delivers a session on patent specification drafting, emphasizing the importance of clarity, organization, and completeness in describing inventions.
Subsequently, Engr. Ana Mae Aquino leads the discussions on abstract writing and the detailed description of inventions, guiding participants on how to effectively summarize and elaborate their innovations for patent applications.

The afternoon session, led by Rio Katrina C. Avila, Head of the ITSO Office, transitions into a Patent Drafting Workshop where participants actively engage in applying the concepts they have learned. The hands-on activity provides an opportunity for participants to refine their outputs and deepen their understanding of patent documentation.
Overall, the activity serves as a valuable platform in strengthening the capability of participants to transform their completed engineering projects into protected intellectual property, reinforcing SLSU’s commitment to fostering innovation and research excellence.
