SLSU Launches FilTALK 2.0 to Promote Filipino Language and Culture Among International Learners

The Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), through its Global Engagement and Strategic Partnerships Office (GESPO), officially launches FilTALK 2.0: Filipino as a Foreign Language with an orientation program held online on May 4, 2026, which brings together participants from the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia. With the theme “Suroy ta!!: Exploring the Language and Culture of the Philippines,” the program aims to deepen intercultural understanding and promote the Filipino language among international learners through structured virtual sessions.

In his welcome address, Campus Director Dr. Clemente H. Cobilla emphasizes the importance of global academic collaboration and language learning in fostering stronger regional ties. This is followed by a presentation of FilTALK 1.0 highlights, which showcases the success of the program’s initial implementation. While delivering the inspirational message, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Constantino G. Medilo Jr. highlights language's role as a bridge to cultural understanding and international cooperation. Messages of support are also given by Dr. Norlyn L. Borong, Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Education, and Dr. Ingrid M. Uy, Director of the Global Engagement and Strategic Partnerships Office, as both reaffirm the university’s commitment to internationalization and quality education.

Dr. Mark B. Galdo, FilTALK Project Leader, presents the program’s purpose, outlining its objectives to equip participants with foundational Filipino language skills while immersing them in Philippine culture. The session also includes the presentation of lecturers and an expectations-setting segment, which covers the program schedule, modules, attendance and participation guidelines, outputs and assignments, and virtual etiquette. The orientation concludes with a photo opportunity and a transition to the first session of FilTALK 2.0, marking the start of a series of learning engagements designed to connect cultures through language.

The event highlights SLSU’s continuing efforts to expand its global footprint through innovative and inclusive educational programs. This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by promoting inclusive and equitable learning opportunities across borders.
