SLSU-TO Launches SAKLAW Journal, Hosts Research Conference in Leyte
The Science and Mathematics Programs of Southern Leyte State University – Tomas Oppus Campus, in partnership with MLG College of Learning, successfully conduct a Research Conference and formally launch the SAKLAW Research Journal on April 30, 2026, at Marcellino’s Hotel in Hilongos, Leyte.

The event gathers faculty members from the Science and Mathematics Department alongside key university officials, including Campus Director Dr. Clemente Cobilla, Director of Extension Services Engr. Jonelle Tablada, and Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services Dr. Frances Ann Sy.
In her keynote address, Sy emphasizes the crucial role of research in higher education, highlighting the importance of scholarly publications and the effective implementation of extension programs. She notes that such initiatives significantly contribute to community development and create a lasting impact among beneficiaries.

A key feature of the conference is the presentation of five research studies tackling various educational and social issues. Topics include flexible learning and student motivation, reading intervention strategies for Grade 7 learners, the development of a computerized enrollment records management system, bullying dynamics in private high schools, and an ethnographic study on the motivations of non-traditional learners in pursuing education.
Each presentation is followed by a question-and-answer session, where panelists pose clarificatory and evaluative questions to further assess the studies’ methodologies and findings.
Top honors go to the study titled “Valuing Access to Education: Understanding the Cultural Motivations of Non-Traditional Learners Through an Ethnographic Lens” by Mr. Benjie R. Nemis.
Certificates of recognition are also presented to guest speakers, institutional partners, and research presenters, while a special citation is given to the top-performing researcher in recognition of excellence in scholarly work. The conference and journal launch also mark the culmination of the ARAL 2.0 Extension Project led by Dr. Marvin S. Daguplo, in collaboration with the Science Education Department of SLSU–Tomas Oppus Campus.

This event supports Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by promoting inclusive and equitable access to quality education through research and innovation.
