SLSU FAS Booth Showcases Successful Collaboration with BJMP Through PDL Livelihood Products
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) booth during the recent Southern Leyte State University Charter Week celebration successfully highlighted products developed by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from the BJMP–Sogod District Jail, drawing attention and support from members of the university community.
Organized by the Mathematics, Statistics, and Physical and Biological Sciences Unit (MSPBS), the booth featured dishwashing liquid products produced by participating PDLs under the university’s extension initiative, PROJECT HOPE: Harnessing Opportunities for PDL Empowerment. Alongside these were handcrafted wallets and bags made by the PDL participants, demonstrating their creativity, patience, and dedication to learning livelihood skills.
The exhibit served as a meaningful platform to showcase the outcomes of the continuing collaboration between the university and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). BJMP personnel facilitated the delivery and coordination of the products, reinforcing the shared commitment to rehabilitation-focused programs.
Throughout the Charter Week celebration, many students, faculty members, and visitors stopped by the booth to learn more about the initiative and support the products. The positive reception from the university community reflected a growing awareness of the importance of rehabilitation, skills development, and second chances.
Proceeds from the sales directly benefit the PDL participants, helping sustain livelihood opportunities while encouraging productive engagement within the facility.
Through initiatives such as this, SLSU FAS continues to demonstrate how extension programs can create real and lasting community impact—linking academic expertise with meaningful opportunities that promote dignity, empowerment, and hope for reintegration.
