SLSU FAS Conducts Consultation Visit at BJMP–Sogod District Jail

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), particularly the Mathematics, Statistics, and Physical and Biological Sciences Unit (MSPBS), of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) conducted a consultation and technical assistance visit on February 26, 2026, at the BJMP–Sogod District Jail as part of its continuing extension engagement under the PROJECT HOPE: Harnessing Opportunities for PDL Empowerment initiative.

The visit was conducted upon the request of BJMP personnel and participating Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) to provide guidance in refining their dishwashing liquid production in preparation for booth displays during the upcoming SLSU Anniversary celebration. The consultation focused on addressing production concerns, reinforcing proper formulation procedures, and improving product presentation.

Science faculty members from the MSPBS Unit, particularly chemistry instructors, provided technical assistance grounded in scientific principles and practical application. Ms. Marisol Olaybar and Ms. Laude Karina Alcober assisted participants in reviewing formulation steps and troubleshooting issues during preparation, emphasizing proper mixing techniques, measurement accuracy, and product consistency. Dr. Yancy Maria Dayola supported workflow organization and practical production strategies for sustainable small-scale manufacturing.

Dr. Adel Grace Gaudicos assisted participants in product labelling and packaging, helping ensure that the finished products were properly prepared and presentable for anniversary booth displays. Frances Nicole Espinosa, FAS RIES Coordinator and chemistry faculty member, facilitated the consultation and ensured alignment with the university’s extension objectives, highlighting the importance of continued mentorship following livelihood training initiatives.

The produced dishwashing liquid soaps will be displayed and sold during the SLSU Anniversary celebration, with proceeds directly benefiting the PDL participants. The Faculty warmly encourages members of the university community to visit the booths and support these products, which represent not only practical livelihood skills but also the dedication, effort, and hope of the participants as they work toward personal growth and reintegration through meaningful opportunities.

Through continued collaboration with BJMP–Sogod District Jail, SLSU FAS reaffirms its commitment to extension services that promote empowerment, productivity, and community engagement.
