SLSU Completes Eco-Centric Installations of Minimalist Trashbin Stations at Sogod Campus

In line with its unwavering commitment to sustainability and smart campus development, Southern Leyte State University has successfully completed the Eco-Centric Installations of Minimalist Trashbin Stations at the Sogod Campus. With a total contract cost of ₱625,732.17, the project commenced on October 20, 2025 and was completed in February 2026, marking another milestone in the University’s environmental stewardship initiatives.

A total of twelve (12) minimalist trashbin stations were strategically dispersed across high-traffic and key locations within the Sogod Campus to encourage proper waste segregation at source. Each station is composed of four (4) clearly labeled compartments, enabling efficient and responsible disposal even before wastes are transported by the General Services personnel to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) or to designated compost pits.

Four-Compartment Waste Segregation System
Biodegradables – food waste, garden waste, and agricultural waste
Recyclables – paper, plastics, glass, and metals
Residuals – doy packs, tarpaulins, drinking straws, grocery and food bags, soiled tissue paper, sanitary napkins, diapers, coated paper, food-contaminated paper, and heavily soiled plastics
Hazardous Wastes – paints and solvents, used oils, dry cell batteries, cleaning chemicals, healthcare waste, laptop and gadget batteries, power banks, consumer electronics, pesticide and herbicide containers, busted lights, industrial and vehicle batteries, and IT/telecom gadgets and peripherals.

This project serves as a key preparatory initiative for the full implementation of the University Solid Waste Action Gameplan (USWAG) – a comprehensive framework aimed at strengthening waste reduction, segregation, recycling, composting, and responsible disposal across all campuses.

The Eco-Centric Installations also complement SLSU’s strong performance in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2025, where the University emerged as the most sustainable university in Eastern Visayas and ranked 6th nationwide – a testament to its consistent and measurable environmental actions.

Beyond functionality, the trashbin stations feature a minimalist and eco-friendly design that enhances campus aesthetics while remaining unobtrusive and accessible. Their strategic placement improves waste collection efficiency and lays the groundwork for future smart waste-management solutions, such as sensor-based monitoring and data-driven environmental management.

Through this initiative, SLSU reinforces its mission as a smart and green university, promoting environmental awareness and shared responsibility among students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The project contributes to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable learning environment, supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and underscores the University’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community accountability.

Together, these small but strategic installations represent a big step toward a greener and more responsible Southern Leyte State University.
