RIES Leads Thought Paper Workshop to Introduce First-Year Students to Scholarly Writing

The Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES) of Southern Leyte State University successfully organized the Thought Paper for Scopus Publication Workshop on January 28, 2026, at the RIES Training Hall (2nd Floor). The activity was participated in by all first-year students across various colleges and aimed to introduce them to academic writing, critical thinking, and the fundamentals of international research publication.

The program formally opened with opening remarks, followed by a welcome message delivered by Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services. In her message, she emphasized the importance of developing a research mindset early in the academic journey and encouraged students to aspire toward international publication.

The lecture proper was facilitated by Eric P. Degorio, Research Assistant, who led both the morning and afternoon sessions. He provided students with practical guidance on developing thought papers, refining research ideas, and aligning academic outputs with international publication standards. Students from FETI, FHTM, and FCIS attended the morning session, while first-year students from FCJ, FITM, and FOE participated in the afternoon session.

The activity concluded with a closing message from Engr. Khorina A. Tablada, Director for Research and Innovation, who reaffirmed RIES’ commitment to strengthening the University’s research culture by empowering students from the earliest stage of their academic life.

Through this initiative, RIES continues to play a vital role in nurturing future researchers and positioning SLSU as a growing contributor to global scholarly discourse.
