Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Conducts Extension Activity on Mental Health and Community Well-Being

In line with its commitment to community engagement and social responsibility, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Southern Leyte State University successfully conducted an online extension activity entitled “Mental Health, Well-Being, and Social Responsibility in the Community” on December 18, via Zoom. The activity was open to the public and participated in by students, educators, and community members from various sectors.

The online seminar was spearheaded by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as part of the University’s GIFT (Generous Initiatives, Fostering Transformation) program—an institutional platform that advances inclusive, accessible, and socially responsive extension initiatives.

The session was facilitated by Mr. Roselo Caduldulan, Guidance Counselor and a faculty member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The discussion focused on mental health awareness, holistic well-being, and the shared responsibility of individuals and institutions in fostering psychologically healthy and socially supportive communities. Practical strategies for recognizing mental health concerns, strengthening emotional resilience, and promoting empathy and collective care were emphasized.

Participants actively engaged throughout the session, reflecting on mental health as both a personal and communal concern. The activity provided an accessible space for learning, dialogue, and reflection, highlighting the importance of proactive mental health promotion within communities, especially in the context of evolving social and psychological challenges.

The extension activity supports SDG 3 by delivering community-based mental health education, increasing awareness of psychological well-being, and promoting preventive mental health practices. Moreover, the emphasis on social responsibility, inclusive dialogue, and community engagement aligns with SDG 16 by contributing to the development of resilient, compassionate, and participatory communities.

Through this initiative, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences reaffirmed its commitment to advancing mental health education beyond the classroom and strengthening the University’s role in achieving inclusive, responsive, and sustainable community development aligned with national and global development goals.
