SLSU Conducts Peer Facilitators Training for Incoming Student Support Volunteers

November 19, 2025 – Southern Leyte State University successfully conducted its Peer Facilitators' Training, gathering incoming Peer Facilitators (PFs) from the various degree programs of the Main Campus. The activity aimed to equip newly selected PFs with essential skills and values needed to support their fellow students academically, socially, and emotionally. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Well-Being and 4: Quality Education, as it promotes psychosocial support, inclusivity, and a healthy learning environment for all learners.

The program formally opened with a welcome message from Ms. Jessa Laarni B. Espinas, Director for Student Affairs and Services, who emphasized the vital role of peer facilitators in building a compassionate and responsive campus community.

Each degree program on the campus was represented by one new PF, ensuring that all year levels and disciplines continue to have student companions who can assist in promoting student welfare. To prepare them for their roles, the participants received a series of talks from the Student Welfare Services Unit:

Ms. Nenita V. Flores, Head of Student Welfare Services, opened the program with an engaging discussion on "Peer Facilitating," emphasizing the role of student support in fostering a healthy campus environment. Guidance Counselor Mr. Roselo Caduldulan followed with a session on "Time Management," guiding participants on strategies to balance academic responsibilities. Psychometrician Ms. Catherine Alesna then delivered an inspiring talk on "Valuing One's Self," highlighting the importance of self-awareness and personal growth. Rounding out the series, Guidance Counselor Ms. Mona Rea C. Cagurol discussed the "Importance of Communication in Peer Facilitating," reinforcing how effective communication strengthens peer support systems within the university community.

These sessions focused on nurturing self-awareness, strengthening interpersonal communication, and enhancing PFs' personal effectiveness as they step into their roles.

Senior Peer Facilitators also played a significant part in welcoming the new batch. Through group dynamics activities and a warm kumustahan session, they shared insights, tips, and experiences that helped the first-year PFs better understand the culture of service within the Peer Facilitator community.

Every year, newly selected PFs from the first year are oriented and integrated into the existing pool of PFs from higher years. This ensures that student support remains active, consistent, and well-represented across all degree programs.

More activities and capacity-building programs for the new PFs are scheduled to roll out in the second semester of 2025–2026 as SLSU continues its commitment to fostering a supportive, student-centered environment.
