Library Learning Commons Empowers Students Through 2025 Information Marathon

The Library Learning Commons successfully conducted the Information Marathon: The Ultimate Student Survival Sprint in September 2025. This initiative aimed to orient first-year students, transferees, and returnees on the library’s various resources, services, and digital systems that are essential to their academic journey. The activity was designed to enhance students’ research and information literacy skills by providing hands-on sessions on library tools and platforms.
The Information Marathon commenced on September 10, 2025, with a University-wide online orientation featuring Ms. Kranz Gale Serino from ODILO as the resource speaker. The online session, held via Jitsi Meet, introduced participants to SoLeySU Learning, the university’s digital learning space, and demonstrated how it integrates with ODILO resources.
Following the kick-off session, a series of weekly in-person orientations was conducted every Wednesday in September (10, 17, and 24) at the Library Mini Theater. Each day consisted of two sessions, morning and afternoon, with students grouped by program. The sessions were facilitated by the Learning Commons team led by Ms. Geanrose L. Colonia, RL, MLIS (Director), together with Ms. Geonalyn Sumalinog, Mr. Reynaldo Cebuala Jr., and Mr. Evans Labastida Jr.
The discussions covered the following topics:
- Library Search Basics – introduction to browsing and locating materials using the OPAC.
- Navigating Online Databases – hands-on practice in accessing subscribed e-resources.
- Account Creation and ODILO Registration – step-by-step guidance for setting up library accounts.
- Technology Integration in the Learning Commons – demonstration of the RFID gate system and self-service book return.
The 2025 Information Marathon proved to be an effective initiative in strengthening students’ research readiness and digital literacy. The series of orientations successfully equipped learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to independently locate, evaluate, and utilize information resources.
It is recommended that similar orientations be continued annually, with the inclusion of advanced research training for upper-year students. Additionally, future sessions may incorporate short assessment activities to further gauge student learning and engagement.
