SLSU-TO and MCC Hold Writeshop on Crafting Publishable Commentary Papers

The Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES) Offices of Southern Leyte State University–Tomas Oppus (SLSU-TO) and Maasin City Campuses (MCC) conducted a Writeshop on Crafting Publishable Commentary Papers on September 10, 2025, via Microsoft Teams. The webinar was attended by instructors, assistant professors, and third- and fourth-year students from both campuses.

The activity aimed to strengthen the university’s thrust toward research productivity and academic publication by equipping faculty members and students with practical strategies for writing high-quality commentary papers that may be considered for publication in highly reputable journals, including Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed publications.

The highlight of the webinar was the session of the resource person, Dr. Ludito V. Ramirez, Director for Journal Management, who presented valuable insights on How to Write a Publishable Commentary Paper. His lecture was followed by a guided workshop that allowed participants to apply techniques in drafting their own commentary papers. The outputs of both students and faculty were uploaded to a shared Google Drive, critiqued and polished by Dr. Ramirez, and subsequently provided with the names of suitable journals for possible publication.

Messages of support were delivered by Dr. Clemente H. Cobilla, Campus Director of SLSU–Tomas Oppus, and Dr. Frederick A. Añiga, Campus Director of SLSU–Maasin City Campus, emphasizing the importance of sustaining research-driven initiatives. The writeshop was spearheaded by Dr. Jonathan J. Palco, Head of RIES–MCC, and Dr. Mark B. Galdo, Head of RIES–TO, who worked in collaboration to ensure the success of the activity.

An inspirational message was also delivered by Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (VP-RIES), highlighting the role of scholarly contributions in advancing the university’s research agenda.

Through this collaborative effort, SLSU demonstrated its commitment to cultivating a research-driven culture and empowering its members to contribute to impactful and publishable academic discourse.

This initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure by promoting research excellence and fostering innovation in higher education.
