SLSU Main Campus Hosts Science Immersion Program in Food Tech and Engineering for PSHS-EVC Students

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Main Campus served as the host institution for the Science Immersion Program of the Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus (PSHS-EVC), held from June 16 to 27, 2025. The program offered PSHS-EVC students an enriching platform for experiential learning, scientific research, and professional development, particularly in the fields of Engineering and Food Technology.
The Science Immersion Program officially opened on June 16, 2025, through a Welcome Program held at the Audio-Visual Room of the FAS Building. Dr. Constantino G. Medilo, Jr., Vice President for Academic Affairs, who gave the welcome message, emphasized the importance of research immersion in shaping future scientists. University President Dr. Jude A. Duarte also expressed his full support for the initiative, and he encouraged the students to actively engage in scientific inquiry, develop a spirit of curiosity, and pursue research-driven solutions to real-world problems.
To prepare participants for their immersion experience, students underwent orientation sessions, site assignments, and safety briefings, equipping them for hands-on laboratory activities and field observations under the mentorship of various SLSU faculty members and research units.
Throughout the two-week immersion, PSHS-EVC students engaged in diverse learning experiences across disciplines such as Food Technology, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Guided by faculty researchers, they conducted scientific investigations, laboratory analyses, and project documentation, gaining insight into real-world applications of STEM principles.
The immersion at SLSU Main Campus concluded with a meaningful Closing Program on June 27, 2025. Mr. Reynand Real of PSHS-EVC sincerely expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality and generous support extended by Southern Leyte State University throughout the entire program. Adwinsur Novem Gempeson (Food Technology) and Kobe Errol M. Duan (Civil Engineering) shared heartfelt reflections on their experiences, highlighting the fun learning activities and inspirations they gained during their time at SLSU.
Ms. Vernabelle Balmori, Food Technology Program Chair and SIP Coordinator, gave the farewell message, alongside Engr. Gilberto P. Rosello, who also extended his congratulations to the students.
The event concluded with the giving of certificates, photo opportunities, and closing remarks by Dr. Ingrid M. Uy, Director of the External Linkages and International Affairs (ELIA) Office.
SLSU’s partnership with PSHS-EVC for this year’s Science Immersion Program demonstrates its continuing commitment to promoting scientific studies and nurturing young minds through research and academic collaboration.
