From Sacrifice to Stage: SLSU Commencement Celebrates Families Behind Every Graduate

Unlike any other earthly and material possession, education is considered the greatest legacy parents can give to their children. It is a lasting asset that cannot be stolen or taken away. In a society where poverty is the main adversary, education serves as the silver lining that can break the cycle of destitution—opening doors to opportunities, empowerment, and a better quality of life.

In a heartfelt celebration of academic achievement and familial support, Southern Leyte State University marked this year's commencement ceremony with a meaningful gesture: inviting parents to accompany their children onstage during the awarding of diplomas.

Held across SLSU campuses, the ceremony turned into a moment of collective victory as graduates were joined by their proud parents while receiving the symbol of their years of hard work and perseverance.

This symbolic act highlighted not only the students' accomplishments but also the sacrifices, prayers, and unwavering support of the families behind them.

For many, the walk across the stage was more than a tradition, it was a tribute to the journey they had taken together in times of financial hardship, uncertainty, and long nights of study sessions.

This meaningful gesture of having parents walk alongside their children in the diploma-giving ceremony will now become an institutionalized practice in Southern Leyte State University, as it reflects the institution’s recognition of the vital role families play in student success.

During the graduation rites, emotions overflowed, smiles beamed, and memories were made as students and parents embraced the moment, side by side—walking not just toward a future of possibilities, but also honoring the shared journey that brought them there.
