SLSU-Hinunangan, DA Host Groundbreaking Inbred Rice Seed Production Training in Region 8

The recent collaboration between the Department of Agriculture (DA), Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), DA-PHILRICE, and the Southern Leyte State University- Hinunangan Campus marked a important milestone in agricultural development with the successful execution of the "Basic Training Course on Inbred Rice Seed Production and Certification for Seed Growers in Region 8."

Held from March 18th to 22nd, 2024, at the Multipurpose Academic Building (MAB), SLSU-Hinunangan, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte, this intensive five-day program drew the participation of seed growers, farmers, and select faculty members from Eastern Visayas.

The overarching objective of this training initiative was to bolster local rice production by empowering farmers with the requisite expertise to cultivate and manage their crops efficiently. Through a comprehensive curriculum, attendees were immersed in diverse topics crucial to successful rice farming, delivered by a lineup of esteemed resource speakers.

Among the notable speakers was Mr. Wade C. Lim, Campus Director, who delved into Leadership and Values Orientation, providing insights into effective leadership strategies essential for agricultural advancement. Mrs. Roxanne D. Pille-Plana of the Agriculture department elucidated Integrated Pest Management Identification & Surveillance, while Engr. Julius Maristela from PhilRice-Bicol expounded on Cultural Management Practices in Inbred Rice Seed Production and Integrated Nutrient Management. Additionally, Mrs. Loida N. Utra, Chief of BPI-NSQCS 8, elucidated the Policies and Guidelines on Seed Certification of Inbred Rice Seed Production, whereas Ms. Jennifer A. Tizon from BPI-NSQCS 8 shed light on the Role of Seed Inspectors in Seed Growing and Production, among other speakers and their respective topics.

The profound impact of the training was evident in the testimonials of participants such as Ms. Ida from Hilongos, who highlighted the invaluable nature of the program, particularly in
the context of rice farming's pivotal role in the agricultural landscape. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enhance her skills and knowledge in rice seed production, recognizing its significance in sustaining the agricultural sector.

Similarly, Mr. Romeo from Calbayog commended the warm hospitality extended by SLSU-Hinunangan, affirming its pivotal role in facilitating a conducive learning environment for participants.

The culminating activities of the training course, including a social night and graduation ceremony for aspiring seed growers, symbolized the collective achievement and commitment towards advancing agricultural practices in Eastern Visayas.
