From devastation to determination: How senior Nerita found sustainable living typhoon Odette

Nerita Acedo was living a quiet life with her husband in the small community of Brgy. Anahawan in Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte until the ferocious winds of Super Typhoon Odette came and ripped everything apart. The couple's home, belongings, and sari-sari store, their sole source of income, were destroyed in an instant. They were left helpless, like many of their neighbors.

But Nerita was not one to give up easily.

Southern Leyte State University and Catholic Relief Operations (CRS) came to their aid. The two organizations partnered to provide financial assistance to those whose sari-sari stores were damaged by the typhoon. Nerita was one of the beneficiaries of the program, and with the grant, she was able to restart her business and rebuild her life.

She used the funds wisely and invested them in her pig poultry. She and her husband were devoted to taking care of their animals and ensuring that they were healthy and well-fed. They were able to sell the pigs at a good price, which gave them a reliable stream of income.

Nerita's story is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and the importance of financial education. Despite the challenges of growing older, she was able to sustain her senior years without depending on her children or relatives for support. Her success is a testament to the fact that anything is possible with the right mindset, resources, and support.

On April 26, 2023, the Monitoring and Evaluation team of Southern Leyte State U, led by the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services, Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy, visited Nerita to witness her incredible transformation.

Nerita recounted her journey, and it was clear to see that her spirit was unbroken despite the hardships she faced.
