Southern Leyte State U receives DILG’s NextGen CapDev Accelerator Award

The national office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) awarded Southern Leyte State University the NextGen CapDev Accelerator Award in Local Governance at the 2022 Capacity Development Accelerator Awards: Gabi ng Pasasalamat on December 13, 2022 at the Manila Hotel.

As DILG's up-and-coming institutional partner, Southern Leyte State U was recognized for its potential to foster innovation that empowers LGU and accelerate excellence in local governance.

Southern Leyte State U has come up with various projects, programs, and activities in combatting against COVID-19 virus.

At the start of the pandemic, as the lone university in the province of Southern Leyte, Southern Leyte State U implemented the SLSU Unified, Proactive and Progressive Response Extension Support Services (SUPPRESS) COVID-19, in partnership with the local and provincial government units of Southern Leyte, to address the needs of its stakeholders, communities, and even beyond brought by the threat of COVID-19.

Part of the SUPPRESS initiative was to develop and produce technologies and innovations to implement an enhanced institutional and community preventive measures. The university was able to provide personal protective equipment (PPEs) for university frontliners, IEC materials, emergency food, and psycho-social counselling to seriously affected students and low earners employees.

On the other hand, Southern Leyte State U, through the College of Computer Studies and Information Technology (CCSIT), developed Automated Contact Tracing System (ACTS) that aims to record and monitor individuals’ movements within the province, the Centralized Border Access Control and Monitoring System that records vehicles and individuals going in and out of the Southern Leyte borders, and Offense Monitoring System that monitors individuals who violate the community quarantine protocols, and municipal and city ordinances.

Southern Leyte State U continues to support and coordinate with its partners and reach to the communities to support their needs as COVID-19 virus is still around the corner.

University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes received the trophy for the CapDev Accelerator Award on behalf of the University.

Dr. Yepes took to social media to extend her congratulations and appreciation to all the hardworking men and women of Southern Leyte State U.

"My salute to all faculty members and staff of the Extension Services officials who've been actively involved in the CapDev activities of SLSU and DILG since 2018 including the university's COVID-19 responses which benefited the LGUs of Southern Leyte. Mabuhay po kayo!" Dr. Yepes posted.

Southern Leyte State U commits to its promise to willingly cooperate and share its expertise to the DILG and its partners to further establish the important role of Southern Leyte State U in influencing the future of governance not just in the province but also in the region and beyond.

The CapDev Accelerator Awards is a recognition program of the DILG that acknowledges the valuable contributions of local governance partners and stakeholders in accelerating the realization of its goals and achieving excellence in local governance.
