Southern Leyte State U concludes 3rd i-CITE, awards best papers for faculty researchers, students

Southern Leyte State University concluded its third launching of the Invention, Creative Works, Innovation and Technology Exhibit (i-CITE) on December 7, 2022, at the Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES) Building with the theme "Innovation Towards Sustainable Tomorrow."

Spearheaded by the RIES office, this two-day event highlighted the creative, scientific, and original ideas of Southern Leyte State U students and professionals across all colleges and campuses and colleges.

The activity was a great opportunity that venues the inventions, innovations, and creative works of Southern Leyte State U's local inventors from the College of Computer Science and Information Technology (CCSIT), Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS), College of Engineering (COE), College of Technology (COT), College of Criminal Justice (CCJ), Bontoc Campus, Tomas Oppus Campus, and Maasin City Campus.

Likewise, i-CITE held a collegiate and professional research conference where CCSIT garnered the best paper award for its Automated Contact Tracing System (ACTS) in the Information Technology-Professional category, ronted by Dr. Alex Bacalla, Dr. Arman Masangkay, Dr. James Brian Flores, and Dr. Czarina Ancella Gabi.

ACTS is one of the research components of an extension project of the college entitled “Empowering the Frontliners for Effective Community Quarantine Implementation.”

At the height of the pandemic where protocols were strictly implemented, ACTS was used to record and monitor individuals’ movements within the Southern Leyte province.

As Southern Leyte State U nurtures a culture of science and technology among its constituents, i-CITE is a way of bringing about economic change as consumers, and possible technology incubators witness the academic and scientific conceptualization up to the commercialization of each tangible technological product.

Further, for the Engineering and Technology- Professional category, Mr. Jonelle Tablada and Ms. Korina Aguilar won the best paper entitled SMS-Based Electric Consumption Monitoring System with Energy Direct Cost Calculation. Mr. Brayan Bornias, on the other hand, garnered the best paper in the Food Technology- Professional category with the paper entitled Chili Yoghurt and the Process of Making Thereof.

In the Collegiate category, Ms. Jessa Pulotan, Ms. Dawilla Maceda, Ms. Gwyneth Joyce Flores, and Mr. Efren Balaba won the best paper for the Information Technology/Engineering Technology with the paper entitled SLSU-Tomas Oppus Student Appointment and Scheduling System.

For Food Technology, Ms. Alyssa Tadena, Ms. Maryjane Savajena, and Ms. Lee Marianne Tingcoy garnered the best paper award with paper entitled Formulation Optimization Of Instant Soup Mix Powder Using Glutinous Rice, Cocoyam, And Sweet Potato Composite Flour.

As booths were present during the activity, the best booth award was accorded to the College of Engineering.

Present during the two-day event was the Program Manager of IPOPhil Technology Transfer Division and the Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST Region 8, Engr. Ramil T. Uy.
