Info Tech dept initiates capacity building on GIS application, geospatial data in disaster risk reduction

Extensionists from the Information Technology department of Southern Leyte State University-Tomas Oppus Campus launched the Capacity Building on the Application of GIS and Geospatial Data in Disaster Risk Reduction on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Ms. Velinda T. Gorduiz, BSIT Department head, discussed the basics of quantum geographic information systems (GIS) and how they apply to the development of a new dataset and the addition of labels and colors to a map as part of the event's launching. Additional symbology and a straightforward map layout can greatly improve the usefulness of geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial data in disaster risk reduction, as was discussed by a student representative from the field of information technology.

The Mapping Population and Population Density, Digitizing Features from Landsat I, Converting GPS Points into a GIS Dataset, Georeferencing, Clipping, and Merging Scanned Paper Maps, Georeferencing Municipal Protected Areas (MPA) Areas, Creating a Simple Map Layout, Secondary Data and GIS Integration, and more will all be covered over the course of this nine-day capacity building event.

The event was graced by Frederick C. Aniga, Director of Extension Services, Dr. Constantino G. Medilo Jr. SLSU - TO Campus Director, Ma’am Nancy B. Francisco RIES Head, Dr. Sybil Krizzia Ledesma Extension Services Coordinator, Hon. Maria Fe Crispina B. Poblete Padre Burgos Municipal Vice Mayor, and Mr. Bobby Mangalo MDRR Officer of Padre Burgos.
