Southern Leyte State U takes part in 55th ASEAN Anniv to celebrate togetherness, acceptance of diversity

In support of the 55th Founding Anniversary of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Southern Leyte State University took part in the simultaneous flag raising ceremony on Monday morning, August 8, 2022.

With this year's theme "ASEAN A.C.T.: Addressing Challenges Together," Southern Leyte State U joined in the virtual kick-off ceremony hosted by the Higher Education (CHED) to launch its month-long celebration.

Various activities and programs are also prepared in line with the celebration to achieve ASEAN's goal of providing young people with various backgrounds and interests to unleash their potential and play an active role in addressing present challenges.

During the flag raising, University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes did a brief talk, like she always does every flag ceremony, but this time highlighted the importance of embracing differences.

"It is always important to get to know the purpose of why ASEAN was organized years back. This is a call for understanding and unity among the people of different culture, races, and nationalities," Dr. Yepes said.

ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

After being founded in 1967, Brunei Darussalam then joined on January 7, 1984, Vietnam on July 28, 1995, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (or Laos) and Myanmar on July 23, 1997, and Cambodia on April 30, 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN

ASEAN reaffirms its commitment to addressing common challenges and sustaining the momentum of ASEAN’s community-building efforts with a strong sense of togetherness as it celebrates its 55th Founding Anniversary.

On August 3, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) was held in Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia where members of the council discussed the need to further strengthen engagement and cooperation with Dialogue Partners and external partners, including through existing ASEAN-led mechanisms, and the importance of ASEAN Centrality, credibility and relevance in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in our regional and global endeavors amidst uncertainty and rapid changes in Southeast Asia and beyond.
