Southern Leyte State U to partner with CRS to provide aide to typhoon Odette-stricken communities

Representatives from the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) paid a visit in Southern Leyte State University on June 2, 2022 to discuss future and potential partnership to implement extension programs and projects while provide assistance to affected communities in the province of Southern Leyte caused by super typhoon Odette.

CRS' Program Manager Engr. Dinah Trina A. Egano and Area Coordinator Mario Elmer G. Mayote had a meeting with University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes, together with Vice President for Research, Innovation and Extension Services (VPRIES) Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy and Univeristy's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Officer Mr. Gordon B. Opina, to discuss potential collaboration on disaster rehabilitation and recovery program in affected communities in the province.

Southern Leyte State U has good track record in implementing extension programs and projects from the national government through the grant-in-aid, the competitive project grant, and the in-house designed programs and projects, including provisions of technical assistance to local government units in coastal resource management, disaster risk management, shelter and engineering design, agriculture for emergencies, LGU rehabilitation and recovery plan formulation, and livelihood and business continuity.
Further, the University has reached out non-government organizations, including national government agencies, and local government units, currently working for disaster rehabilitation and recovery for communities in the province caused affected by both typhoon Odette and tropical storm “Agaton” in Southern Leyte, towards building partnership.

CRS is a faith-based international non-governmental organization with a presence in more than 100 countries, including the Philippines, offers many opportunities for universities like Southern Leyte State U to contribute to emergency response, its website says.
