CCSIT to improve laboratory, professional infra in HEIs

The College of Computer Studies and Information Technology (CCSIT) of the Southern Leyte State University-Main Campus (SLSU-MC) will start a program called “Establishing an Intelligent System Laboratory for Strengthening Teaching Effectiveness and Research Capacity in Precision Agriculture” to improve the laboratory infrastructure, professional infrastructure and professional development in all Higher Educational Institutions in the region, particularly in Samar State University, Visayas State University, and Naval State University.

This is a 2-year program funded by the Commission and Higher Education (CHED), amounting to Php 4M, through its Institutional Development and Innovation Grants (IDIG).

The program aims to upgrade the computer laboratory room into an intelligent system laboratory for instruction and its application to Precision Agriculture, facilitate training/workshop on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Intelligent System and Precision Agriculture, and develop programs on reinforcing the teaching skills of faculty in the two core subjects of Intelligent System, and Precision Agriculture.

Intelligent System and Precision Agriculture allow the efficient use of finite resources which is essential for achieving agricultural sustainability and in protecting the sparse arable land in the region. Thus, it is a way of thinking about how to improve the production of the farmers and achieve the goal of optimizing returns on inputs while preserving resources.

Dr. Rhoderick Malangsa, one of the proponents, hopes to start the implementation of this program this year.

“We started to propose this program in 2017 and finally it is now realized”, Malangsa added.

Along with Malangsa is Dr. Alex Bacalla, the Dean of CCSIT, as the proponent of this said program.
