Technology Education graduate students tour SLSU Bontoc's Agri-fisheries Facilities
SLSU graduate students taking up Master in Technology Education (MTE) gathered up for a weekend excursion at SLSU-Bontoc Agri-fishery facilities last October 07, 2023. This activity is part of their course on Fishery and Agriculture, one of the significant courses SLSU Graduate School offers for graduate students taking MTE.
The experiential learning started with a visit to the SLSU-Bontoc Tilapia hatchery, where students were briefed on general tilapia husbandry, including feed and water management, transport strategies for tilapia fingerlings, tilapia sex determination, and artificial incubation for intensive fry production. The team proceeded for a quick look at the SLSU-Bontoc mangrove nursery. Here, students evaluate different species of mangrove seedlings based on their readiness for transplantation. A tour at the under-renovated brackishwater station meant for bangus production completes the morning session.
In the afternoon, the team had a lecture on commodity-based aquaculture technologies and fish health management, followed by a tour of the newly renovated Bioresource Production Technology Center (BioProTeC). This is the 1st tour organized at the center after being devastated by Super Typhoon Odette in 2021. A stop by the tilapia grow-out ponds and at the Department of Agricultural Sciences demonstration area completed the excursion.
