Empowering SLSU-MCC Employees: Successful Seminar-Workshop Enhances Extension Project Crafting and IEC Material Development

To enhance the capabilities of its faculty, staff, and students in responding to community needs, the SLSU-MCC RIES Office, under the leadership of Dr. Magdaleno T. Samaco Jr., RIES Head, organized a two-day Seminar-Workshop on Crafting Extension Project, Programs, and Activities (PPAs) and IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) Material Development. The event occurred on January 9-10, 2024, at the Roman Galdo Convention Center (RGCC) in Macrohon, Southern Leyte.

On January 9, the first day of the seminar was focused on Crafting Extension PPAs. Dr. Angel Sabusab, Director of Extension Services, and Ma'am Adelfa C. Diola, Science Research Specialist II, led discussions emphasizing the importance of conducting research-based PPAs and the commitment required for their successful execution. Participants were guided through quality procedures and processes necessary for effective PPAs. The session also included presentations of sample PPAs aligned with research-based procedures, fostering an active and productive engagement among the participants.

The second day commenced with a discussion on the Importance of IEC Materials and How to Get Started by Ms. Jahara Napalla. Participants were educated on crafting IEC materials with clarity and efficiency to capture the target audience's attention. The session highlighted the significance of simplicity coupled with educational depth. After the discussion, participants were tasked to create an outline for their IEC materials in preparation for the subsequent workshop.

Mr. Robin Ariel F. Sumaya led the workshop on IEC Materials Development in Brochure/Pamphlet style. He demonstrated various techniques, styles, and etiquette using applications like MS PowerPoint. Tips on combining elements and colors appropriate to the mood and atmosphere of the target audience were also provided. Participants created brochures based on their PPAs, and after presenting their outputs, Mr. Sumaya offered valuable comments and suggestions for improvement in style, design, color, and element combinations.

The final discussion, focusing on IEC Material Development via Visual Design: AV Presentation, was presented by Mr. Rannie Sumacot. The session delved into using digital media to reach a broader audience, exploring different avenues for material dissemination. Mr. Sumacot provided sample applications, tricks, and tutorials on developing AVPs or video outputs. Participants showcased their video outputs extracted from their PPAs, highlighting the potential of visual design in conveying information effectively.

The seminar-workshop on the Crafting Extension PPAs and IEC Material Development proved valuable, equipping the participants with essential skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to their respective communities. Active participation, insightful discussions, and creating impactful extension projects and IEC materials marked the event.
