DTI funds training for farmers, MSMEs in banana chips processing

In a bid to enhance the capabilities of farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the province, the Department of Trade and Industries (DTI) funded a specialized training program focused on banana chips processing on June 7, 2023 at the Center for Organic and Natural Food Research (CONFoR) of Southern Leyte State University- Main Campus.

The training, attended by 40 participants from Sogod, Bontoc, and Tomas Oppus municipalities, aimed to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in this industry.

Spearheaded by the office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (OVPRIES), leading the training sessions were faculty-researchers and experts in the field from the university.

Dr. Mary Ann Jilly R. Ramirez, delivered an insightful lecture on the importance of adhering to strict food safety standards. Her expertise and guidance were instrumental in fostering a culture of safety among the attendees.

Mr. Omar D. Alo also conducted a comprehensive lecture on the intricacies of the trade. He provided valuable insights into the art of producing high-quality banana chips.

As part of the hands-on training component, Mr. Alo guided the participants through the step-by-step process, ensuring they gained practical knowledge that they could implement in their own ventures.

Furthermore, Ms. Vernabelle L. Balmori delivered a lecture that shed light on the importance of attractive and informative packaging. Recognizing that visual appeal and clear product information play crucial roles in attracting consumers, Ms. Balmori provided participants with valuable insights into effective packaging and labeling strategies.

Lastly, Ms. Disereely B. Maco, who delved into the critical aspects of pricing and costing. Ms. Maco's coaching sessions aimed to help farmers and MSMEs understand the intricate financial dynamics of the banana chips industry.

By honing their knowledge of pricing strategies and cost analysis, participants gained a competitive edge in the market, setting themselves up for success.

The training program, made possible through the support of the DTI, offered a unique opportunity for local farmers and MSMEs to develop their skills in banana chips processing.
