Southern Leyte State U joins first nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill since pandemic

To further test the disaster preparedness capabilities of various sectors in the city, Southern Leyte State University, facilitated by the University’s Office of Environmental Management and Disaster Risk Reduction Management (EM-DRRM), joined the nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill on Thursday morning, September 8, 2022.

The participation of Southern Leyte State U is a response to the call of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NRRMC) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) for public and private schools, most especially in the higher education institutions, to also join the simultaneous earthquake drill alongside local government units as well as other private and public institutions.

The University's EM-DRRM Officer Mr. Gordon Opina highlighted the importance of the institutions, especially in Southern Leyte State U, to be prepared at all times.

"It is a must for us to always equip ourselves with the dos and don'ts should calamities hit us and take the necessary precautionary measures," Mr. Opina said.

This is the first time since pandemic that the NDRRMC and OCD organized a nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill. The last one was conducted in 2020 before COVID-19 struck.
